West Virginia Colleges Summary

West Virginia has a post-secondary student population of about 100,000. While only 12 other states have fewer students, only 13 other states have fewer people, so its student population is in line with the state's size. There are almost 80 colleges and career schools in the state. While West Virginia is one of only nine states with less than ten public schools, it is one of 12 states with more than 85% of its students enrolled in its public institutions.

The largest college in the state is West Virginia University with more than 65,000 students. This includes the West Virginia University Institute of Technology and the West Virginia University Hospital Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, which has less than 10 students (as of 2005 data).

Only one other college has more than 10,000 students, and that is Marshall University. Other larger schools with between 3,000 and 5,000 students include: Fairmont State University, Mountain State University, Shepherd University, West Virginia State University, and Fairmont State Community and Technical College.

There are approximately 30 post-secondary schools in West Virginia with fewer than 100 students. This includes the HRDE - Stanley Technical Institute with less than 30 students cumulatively in their 3 locations in Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Hinton.
