Long Beach, New York, in Nassau county, is 8 miles S of Hempstead, New York and 19 miles SE of New York, New York. The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns that it shares the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area with. Long Beach's population is approximately 35,462.
Long Beach History
Long Beach was originally inhabited by Rockaway Indians. It was first settled in by Europeans in 1643, when baymen and farmers who used the land for fishing and harvesting arrived. A lifesaving station was established in the city in 1849. A builder from Brooklyn, Austin Corbin, tried to develop the island as a resort. He also formed a partnership with the Long Island Railroad in 1880 and financed the New York and Long Beach Railroad Co. to lay track from Lynbrook to Long Beach. Long Beach was incorporated as a village in 1918. It became a city in 1922.
