Introduction to Marietta, Georgia
Marietta, Georgia, in Cobb county, is 17 miles NW of Atlanta, Georgia. The city is included in the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 58,748 people lived in Marietta.
Marietta History
Marietta was first settled in around 1824. The city was named after the wife of the Supreme Court Judge, Thomas Cobb. However, some also believe that it was named after Marietta, Ohio. The city was officially recognized on December 19, 1834. It also became the home base of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Oakton, which was constructed in 1838, is the oldest continuously occupied residence of the city. It also served as the headquarters of Major General Loring during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Marietta was incorporated in 1852 and John Glover was elected as the first mayor.
