Winter Garden, Florida, in Orange county, is 12 miles W of Orlando, Florida (center to center) and 68 miles NE of Tampa, Florida. The city is considered part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Winter Garden has a population of 14,351.
Winter Garden History
Winter Garden's first settler was W.C. Roper in 1857. He came searching for a home-site from Meriwether County in Georgia. Roper bought 600 acres of land and settled down with his family. He built a grist mill, a saw mill, a sugar mill and a tannery, where he made shoes. Roper’s family was followed by many more families, and helped develop the site into a full-fledged town.
