Introduction to Treasure Island, Florida
Treasure Island, Florida, in Pinellas county, is 5 miles W of St. Petersburg, Florida (center to center) and 22 miles SW of Tampa, Florida. Part of the surrounding Tampa - Saint Petersburg - Clearwater metro area, Treasure Island is home to some 7,450 residents.
Treasure Island History
Treasure Island was formerly settled by the Timucua tribe who continued to trade with other Indian tribes until Panfilo de Narvaez arrived in the area in 1528. He decimated numerous birds and inhabitants before he left the community in search of gold. The town is said to have gotten its name because a couple of wooden chests were discovered on the beach, which were claimed to have contained treasure. Soon, the people began to call the community ‘Treasure Island’. It is also said that Noel A. Mitchell, who was a developer, was responsible for giving the area its present name. He tried to bolster land sales by spreading news that the community had buried treasure. After World War II through the 1950's, the area flourished in terms of real estate.

There are numerous parks in the community which are ideal for short day-trips. Some of the parks are the Anclote Key Preserve State Park, the Fort De Soto Park and the Honeymoon Island State Park. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the Florida State Fairgrounds and the Big Cat Rescue are among other notable local attractions. The popular animal parks in the area include the Lowry Park Zoo and The Jungle. Golf enthusiasts can visit Twin Brooks Golf Course, the Tides Golf Club and Smuggler's Cove Adventure Golf. Those interested in local history and culture can tour area museums such as the Florida International Museum, the Pinellas County Heritage Village, the Science Center of Pinellas County, and the Museum of Science and Industry.
