Introduction to Titusville, Florida

Titusville, Florida, in Brevard county, is 34 miles SE of Deltona, Florida (center to center) and 110 miles NE of Tampa, Florida. The city is situated in the Central Atlantic Coast of Florida along the Indian River Lagoon. It's known as "Space City, USA." The municipality is located a few miles away from the renowned Kennedy Space Center. Titusville is located near prominent wildlife areas.

Titusville History

The region was originally inhabited by the Ais Indians. By 1760 the Indians had vanished, primarily due to slave raids, disease and rum. The Florida region was acquired in 1821 from Spain, however the Seminole Wars prevented the establishment of settlements. Colonel Henry T. Titus arrived in 1867 with a plan to create a town on acreage his wife owned. He constructed a large hotel and donated land for the construction of churches and a courthouse.

The Atlantic Coast, St. Johns & Indian River Railroad came to the city in 1885 which brought tourism and helped Titusville become a prominent agricultural area and shipping location for pineapple and citrus. During the 1950's the Kennedy Space Center was established which created substantial growth in the population, the economy and tourism.

It's regarded as one of the best locations for bird watching in the world and it includes unspoiled beach areas. The region is home to the Enchanted Forest Nature Sanctuary. The Indian River Lagoon and the St. Johns River provide excellent opportunities for fishing. Golfers enjoy the quality nearby courses. Kayaking swimming, boating, snorkeling and parasailing are popular outdoor activities. Titusville is approximately an hour away from Orlando's popular tourist destinations.
