Tarpon Springs History

The earliest settlers at Tarpon Springs came in around 1880s and consisted mostly of Greek immigrants. The seabed in this area has huge colonies of sponges which attracted the Greeks, for whom sponge diving was a traditional occupation. The coast is also abundant with the Tarpon fish, hence the name of the city. The sponge industry flourished so much that Tarpon Springs went on to be known as the “Sponge Capital of the World”. But the industry declined when contamination due to certain bacteria destroyed the sponge beds. The industry was revived again in the 1980s and continues to flourish.
