Stuart, Florida, in Martin county, is 9 miles SE of Port St. Lucie, Florida (center to center) and 98 miles N of Miami, Florida. The city is conveniently located inside the Fort Pierce - Port Saint Lucie metropolitan area. There are an estimated 14,633 people in Stuart.

Stuart History

In 1870, Stuart had its first settlers. They were non-native Americans. Between 1893 and 1895 this area was known as Potsdam. It was named by a local landowner named Otto Stypmann. The present name Stuart was given to this area in 1895, after the Florida East Coast Railway was established. It was named in honor of Homer Hine Stuart, Jr. who was also a local landowner. In 1914, Stuart was finally incorporated as a town.

There are some excellent golf courses and a beach in Stuart, which provide some great fun filled activities. The Elliot Museum has a good collection of dioramas and other objects of interest. People also have a great time at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, which offers a number of interesting activities that both kids and adults enjoy.

Fort Lauderdale International Airport provides access to air transportation.
