For almost 200 years, St. Augustine was the Spanish center of power in North America. Apart from the problem of hurricanes, the city of St. Augustine also faced a history of wars with the French, British and Native Americans, as well as famine and plague. When Spain ceded Florida to America, St. Augustine prospered, especially during the Seminole war of the 1830s. The oil tycoon, Henry Flagler, visited the city in 1883 and invested in the restoration and development of the city as a winter resort.
