Introduction to South Miami, Florida
South Miami, Florida, in Miami Dade county, is 2 miles NE of Kendall, Florida (center to center) and 7 miles SW of Miami, Florida. The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns with which it shares the Miami metropolitan area. South Miami contains a population of approximately 10,741.
South Miami History
W.A. Larkins was one of the early landowners of this area. When the community grew and a post office was built, Larkins was made the first postmaster. The community itself was named Larkins, in his honor. In 1926, when the residents of this area wanted to incorporate it, they adopted the name South Miami. In 1933, the city which was originally six square miles in size was cut down to 3 miles with the intention of reducing municipal responsibilities. It was further reduced in 1937.
