Satellite Beach History

The city of Satellite Beach is situated on Florida's 'Space Coast' in Brevard County. It was named Satellite Beach in 1871, because of its proximity to Cape Canaveral. Originally, it was largely comprised of palmettos and oak scrub. In 1951, the remaining public land came under private ownership, but no permanent houses were built. Even during World war II, the area was only inhabited by animals. A widow named Stephanie Snaith, was the first person to build a permanent home, which she did in 1951.
