Introduction to New Smyrna Beach, Florida
New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in Volusia county, is 14 miles SE of Daytona Beach, Florida (center to center) and 100 miles SE of Jacksonville, Florida. The city is located in the Daytona Beach metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 20,048 people lived in New Smyrna Beach.
New Smyrna Beach History
New Smyrna got its name in 1769 from Scotish Man named Dr. Andrew Turnbull when he started his colony with 200 Greeks, 110 Italians and 1190 Minorcans. In 1783, the Spanish regained their control over this land. In 1819 they sold New Smyrna to the United States. The town of New Smyrna was incorporated in 1887. The name was changed to New Smyrna Beach in 1947 as the city took over the seaside community of Coronado Beach.

New Smyrna Beach has more than 13 miles of pristine white sand beaches, along with 24 miles of coastline at the nearby Canaveral National Seashore. The outdoor recreational activities include swimming, golf, scuba diving, hiking, windsurfing, fishing, boating and other water sports. New Smyrna Beach also organizes the Black Heritage Festival every year and Radio Disney Family Kidz Days events twice a year.
