Longboat Key History
The town of Longboat Key, divided equally between Sarasota and Manatee Counties, was officially incorporated in 1955. It is a barrier island community. Manatee County, established in 1855, was inhabited by the Native Americans for many years, and it is said that the county may have been the De Soto Expedition’s landing site. The name of the county, 'Manatee', is a term for the sea cow. Sarasota County, founded in 1921, is said to have been named after a word in the indigenous language of Calusa.
