Key Biscayne History
The area presently known as Key Biscayne was officially discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513. He named it Santa Marta and claimed it for his Spanish King. In 1825, the U.S. Government bought a small part of the property from an American woman in the area, and built the Cape Florida Lighthouse on it. The woman and her husband then went on to develop the town of Key Biscayne. They began by offering 264 lots for $500 each.

The Key Biscayne Community Center offers a number of facilities, including indoor basketball, a gym, and a heated pool, among others. One can also go on tours to Cape Florida Lighthouse. Overall, Key Biscayne offers excellent opportunities for picnicking, biking, water sports and wind surfing.
