Inverness, Florida, in Citrus county, is 20 miles N of Spring Hill, Florida (center to center) and 61 miles N of Tampa, Florida. The city is home to some 6,789 residents.

Inverness History

Inverness, established in 1889, was formerly named Tompkinsville. According to the historian Mary McRae of Homosassa, the community of Inverness received its name from a Scotsman, who was enchanted by Lake Tsala Apoka and was so impressed with the beauty of the place that he christened it ‘Inverness’ after the town in Scotland. The term ‘Inver’ is a Gaelic one, which means the mouth of the river. The River Ness, which originates from Loch Ness, flows through the city.
