Florida City, Florida is 18 miles SW of Kendall, Florida (center to center) and 28 miles SW of Miami, Florida. Located in Miami Dade County, the population of the city is 7,843.

Florida City History

Florida City originated as a land promotion which was named Detroit. The first thirty families, who were also the first settlers, arrived in 1910. At that time, there were no buildings in the area. Until their houses could be constructed, these families had to stay in Homestead. The area received official incorporation in 1914. Florida City, along with Homestead, underwent catastrophic damage in 1992 when South Florida was struck by Hurricane Andrew. Together, the cities of Homestead and Florida City form the greater Homestead-Florida City area.
