Introduction to De Land, Florida

De Land, Florida, in Volusia county, is 9 miles N of Deltona, Florida (center to center) and 92 miles S of Jacksonville, Florida. The city is included in the Daytona Beach metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 20,904 people lived in De Land.

De Land History

Previously, this area was known as Persimmon Hollow because of the wild persimmon trees that grow around the spring. In 1876, Henry A. DeLand founded this town. He envisioned this area as a citrus, agricultural and tourism center. The city was incorporated in 1882 and became a county seat in 1887. De Land was the first city in Florida that had electricity. Later in 1883, Henry A. DeLand also established DeLand Academy, which is the first private college of Florida.
