Cocoa Beach was initially settled by a family of slaves who had been newly freed after the Civil War. The development of Cocoa Beach began when it was bought by Gus Edwards. It was established as a city in 1925 and incorporated in 1957.

The city of Cocoa Beach is a popular vacation destination. It offers a unique combination of experiences to visitors because of its location between the Kennedy Space Center, the Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral. It has a six mile long beach with facilities for all kinds of entertainment activities. There are great places for shopping and dining in the city. One can also watch missile launches place at the Kennedy Space Center. The 27-holed municipal golf course delights golf lovers. The city hosts an annual Space Coast Art festival during Thanksgiving Weekend which is a highly anticipated event in Brevard County.
