Clewiston History

The Seminole Indians, the first inhabitants of present day Clewiston, had a fishing camp by Lake Okeechobee. In 1920, Alonzo Clewis of Tampa and John O'Brien of Philadelphia purchased land in the region to establish a community. The foundations of a town were laid, and the Moore Haven & Clewiston Railroad was built to connect the community with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad at Moore Haven. Clewiston, which was incorporated as a city in 1925, was named in honor of a banker, A.C. Clewis. It became well known for sport fishing, especially that of largemouth bass. Sugar plantations took hold during the mid 1900s. The US Sugar Corporation was the largest manufacturer in the city, and Clewiston came to be known as "America's Sweetest Town".
