Brooksville, Florida, in Hernando county, is 3 miles E of Spring Hill, Florida (center to center) and 42 miles N of Tampa, Florida. The city is located in the Tampa - Saint Petersburg - Clearwater metropolitan area. Brooksville has a population of 7,264.
Brooksville was originally called Melendez. It was settled in 1845 by four families - they were the Howell family in the North, the Parsons family in the South, the Jon L. Mays family in the East and the Hale family in the West. The present name was given in honor of Preston Brooks of South Carolina, who was a Representative. Brooksville was incorporated in 1880.
Residents enjoy monthly events like antique car shows, live music shows and other performances. The Brooksville Founders Week Celeberation has been held every year since 2006. The city has a library and a nine-hole golf course. There are picnicking facilities, walking trails and parks. The residents enjoy fishing, hunting and biking. They also have the option of camping, kayaking and canoeing in Nobleton, which lies at a distance of 12 miles.
Transportation is served by Hernando County Airport.
Pasco-Hernando Community College serves the city's educational requirements.
