Belle Glade History
The earliest records suggest that Belle Glade was originally inhabited by Calusa Indians. It was originally known as Hilsboro. The city was incorporated in 1928. On the 16th of September, 1928, a powerful hurricane completely destroyed Belle Glade. This prompted the national government to build a levee which would control future floods. Belle Glade has thrived after being rebuilt; it has a flourishing agricultural industry and serves as a favored destination for sport fishing.
