Bartow, Florida, in Polk county, is 12 miles SE of Lakeland, Florida (center to center) and 37 miles E of Tampa, Florida. The city is located in the Lakeland - Winter Haven metropolitan area. Bartow has a population of 15,340.

Bartow History

The city was named after General Francis S. Bartow, the first Confederate officer to become a martyr in the American Civil War. It had its first settlers in 1850. They settled near the headwaters of the Peace River and built Fort Blount. Later, in 1861, a government was established at Polk County. After the American Civil War ended, it was decided that the county seat should be named after Francis Bartow.
